Sea Turtle Rescue & Hatchery

As a Sumatra Turtle Conservation Volunteer, you become part of a dedicated team working on two interwined goals: safe guarding endangered sea turtles and uplifting the coastal communities that share their habitat.

Background of the Sumatra Turtle Conservation Program

Sumatra’s western coastline serves as a critical nesting and foraging ground for Five sea-turtles species:

Green Turtle (Chelonia mydas)

IUCN Status (Endangered)

Hawksbill Turtle (Eretmochelys imbricate)

IUCN status (Critically Endangered)

Leatherback Turtle (Dermochelys coriacea)

IUCN status (Critically Endangered)

Olive Ridley Turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea)

IUCN status (Vulnerable)

Loggerhead Turtle (Caretta caretta)

IUCN status (Vulnerable rare in Sumatra)

Our Conservation Impact

Rescue & Rehabilitation

Assist in treating injured or disabled turtles-cleaning wounds, monitoring recovery, and maintaining rehabilitation pools.

Nesting- Beach Patrols

Help survey beaches at night, record nesting data, relocate vulnerable clutches to protected hatcheries, and ensure eggs incubate safely.

Hatchling Releases

Experience the unforgattble moment of guiding newly emerged turtles to the surf, boosting their survival chances against predators and poachers.

Plastic-Pollution Campaigns

Lead the beach cleans-up and school workshop that highlight the link between marine debris and turtle mortality, inspiring long-term behavioural chance.

Why Our Role Matters

Six of the world’s seven sea turtle species are classified as vulnerable to critically endangered. By combining hands-on animal care with awareness- raising and livelihood support, you address the root causes of population decline-poaching, by-catch, habitatless, and plastic waste.

Community Engagement

Environmental Education

Co-teach lessons in local schools about ocean ecology, recycling and sustainable fishing practices.

Income Alternatives

Support community micro-projects-such eco-tour guiding or handcraft cooperatives-that reduce reliance on turtle harvesting.

Sumatra Turtle conservation placement – Sungai Pinang

As a Sumatra turtle conservationist you we have based at our coastal sanctuary in sungai pinang, West Sumatra a facility purpose built for the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of sea turtles. Each day begins with monitoring the rehabilitation pools: checking water quality, assessing the healing progress of flipper injuries or shell fractures, and administering medication under the guidance of our resident vet. we assist in egg-protection patrols, retrieving clutches confiscated from poacher and relocating them to the temperature-controlled hatcheries where you will log incubation data and learn to recognize embryonic development stages. Training seassions cover species identification (green, hawksbill, leatherback, olive ridley, loggerhead), nest construction techniques that mimic natural beach conditions, and protocols for minimizing human imprinting on hatchlings.

Core Duties

  • Preparing fresh food and helping to feed the turtles daily

  • Cleaning the project site and surrounding beach areas
